Nutrition for Cold and Flu Season

Cold and flu season is here! While there is no guaranteed way to prevent getting sick, there are some things you can do to boost your immune system and reduce your risk.. Eating a healthy daily nutrition plan is one of the best things you can do to support your immune system.

Here are some specific nutrition tips for staying healthy during cold and flu season:

  •  Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables - Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are essential for a healthy immune system. Aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
  •  Get enough vitamin C - Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to boost the immune system. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, and tomatoes. It is better to eat foods that are naturally high in vitamin C than turn to vitamin C supplements. So hold off on the emergen-C for now and increase your intake of fruits and veggies! 
  •  Eat zinc-rich foods - Zinc is another important nutrient for a healthy immune system. Good sources of zinc include lean meats, poultry, beans, lentils, and nuts.
  •  Drink plenty of fluids - Staying hydrated is important for overall health and well-being, and it can also help to prevent dehydration, which can weaken the immune system. Aim to drink eight glasses of water per day.

In addition to eating a healthy diet, there are other things you can do to boost your immune system and stay healthy during cold and flu season, such as:

  •  Improving the health of your digestive system 
  • Getting enough sleep
  •  Exercising regularly
  •  Managing stress
  •  Washing your hands frequently
