A Fruity Summer

nutrition sport nutrition Jul 14, 2024

Summer sunshine begs for fresh, delicious treats, and what better way to satisfy your taste buds than with seasonal fruits!

Bursting with flavor, vitamins, and hydration, summer fruits are a healthy and fun way to beat the heat.

Here are some AWESOME summer fruits and a bonus recipe to get your creative juices flowing:

Berries: Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and flavor. This is a great way to keep their tummies happy and help them feel full longer, reducing the urge for sugary snacks.

Peaches and plums: These seasonal favorites are packed with vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, C, and calcium. They also help with regulating blood sugar levels, which makes them a great snack.

High water fruits: Mango, watermelon, and grapes are all great sources of flavorful hydration. Watermelon is 92% water, which makes it a great substitute for any sugar cravings. Grapes can also be frozen to make them an easy go-to snack on hot summer days.

Watermelon popsicles

These refreshing watermelon popsicles are the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer day and they're so easy to make!

Ingredients:

• 4 cups seedless watermelon, chopped

• 1 tablespoon lime juice (optional)

• Honey or maple syrup (optional, to taste)

Instructions:

1. Prep the Watermelon: Wash and chop the watermelon into chunks, removing any seeds.

2. Blend it Up: Place the chopped watermelon in a blender. Blend until smooth.

3. Taste Test (Optional): If you prefer a slightly tart popsicle, add a tablespoon of lime juice. If your watermelon isn't very sweet, you can add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup to taste. Be sure to taste again after adding any additional ingredients.

4. Freeze!: Pour the watermelon mixture into popsicle molds, leaving about 1/2 inch of space at the top for expansion during freezing. Pop in the popsicle sticks and freeze for at least 4 hours, or overnight for a completely solid popsicle.

Tips:

Get Fancy: For a fun twist, layer the popsicle mixture with another fruit puree, like mango or pineapple or Greek yogurt.

Fruity Fun: Add a few fresh mint leaves or chopped berries to the popsicle molds before pouring in the mixture.
