Maybe you have heard of this, maybe not but it’s the newest craze to hit the health and fitness market. It seems as if hydrogen water bottles are popping up just about everywhere from Amazon to Walmart to specialized online companies.

Hydrogen water is regular water (Hā‚‚O) that has been infused with extra molecular hydrogen (Hā‚‚) gas. Molecular hydrogen is a naturally occurring antioxidant that can be dissolved into water without changing its pH, taste or appearance.

The claims of drinking hydrogen infused water are that the added hydrogen gas can provide health benefits by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the body.

So, what exactly can it do for the body? Here are some of the potential health and fitness benefits:

  1. Antioxidant properties: One of the primary benefits of hydrogen water is its potential to neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Free radicals can contribute to oxidative stress, which is linked to aging, inflammation and many chronic diseases. By reducing oxidative stress, hydrogen water might help support overall health.
  2. Reduced inflammation: Some studies suggest that hydrogen water may help reduce inflammation, which is key in managing conditions like arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Lower inflammation levels can also aid in quicker recovery from workouts or injuries.
  3. Improved exercise performance and recovery: For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, hydrogen water is often touted as a way to improve endurance and reduce muscle fatigue. Research indicates that it may reduce lactic acid buildup, helping to minimize muscle soreness and enhance recovery after exercise.
  4. Enhanced energy levels: Some users of hydrogen water report increased energy and stamina during physical activities. This may be due to its potential to enhance mitochondrial function—the part of the cell responsible for energy production.
  5. Cognitive health: Preliminary studies suggest that the antioxidant properties of hydrogen water may support brain health by protecting neurons and potentially reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

So, should you drink hydrogen-infused water? Well, it’s difficult to say at this point. While hydrogen water shows promise in various areas of health and fitness, much of the research is still in its EARLY stages.

Though it's generally safe to consume, more large-scale, long-term research studies are needed to confirm its benefits.

Now, if you have a problem drinking water and staying hydrated and want to pay for a special, hydrogen water bottle (usually $40-250), there is likely no harm in doing so. As with just about everything in the nutrition field, it will boil down to the infamous n of 1 experiment and more research needing to be done before we can truly answer the question if hydrogen water should be part of your normal daily routine.
