What is HBCD?

The sports nutrition product market is constantly changing with new ingredients and formulations being introduced regularly. Some of this is based on science, some technology and some a mixture of the two.

Cyclic dextrin, also known as highly branched cyclic dextrin (HBCD), is one of those very ingredients. HBCD is a specialized carbohydrate that is produced from starch and through an enzymatic process, starch is broken down and restructured into a cyclic, highly branched form. This restructuring gives cyclic dextrin unique properties that make it different from simpler sugars like glucose or dextrose.

HBCD is made up of glucose molecules that form a ring-like structure. This structure gives it a high molecular weight and makes it more complex than traditional carbohydrates. Despite this complexity, it is still rapidly absorbed by the body, making it highly efficient for providing energy during exercise.

Thinking of trying HBCD? Here are some of the benefits:

  1. Rapid absorption without spiking blood sugar
One of the key advantages of cyclic dextrin is its ability to be absorbed quickly by the body without causing a sharp spike in blood sugar levels. Unlike simple sugars that can cause a rapid rise and fall in energy, cyclic dextrin provides a more stable release of glucose into the bloodstream.
  2. Easy on the stomach
It has a low osmolality. Osmolality refers to the concentration of particles in a solution, and the lower it is, the quicker the solution can leave the stomach. Cyclic dextrin has a much lower osmolality compared to traditional carbohydrate sources, meaning it passes through the stomach faster, reducing the risk of GI distress symptoms.
  3. Sustained energy
For endurance athletes, maintaining consistent energy levels is critical. Cyclic dextrin’s branched structure allows it to be broken down and utilized over a more extended period compared to simpler carbohydrates.
  4. Improved hydration and recovery
Carbohydrates in sports drinks are not just about energy. They also play a crucial role in fluid absorption and retention. Cyclic dextrin enhances water absorption, making it a dual-action ingredient for hydration and energy replenishment. Additionally, its ability to promote faster glycogen replenishment can help with post-workout recovery.

Cyclic dextrin is a cutting-edge carbohydrate that has found its place in sports nutrition product market due to its superior absorption, sustained energy release and low risk of GI distress symptoms. It can provide an efficient energy source that can help optimize performance, maintain hydration and support recovery.
