Should You Take SPMs?

Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are bioactive molecules that play a crucial role in resolving inflammation - something all of us should pay more attention to. They are derived from omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and actively promote the resolution phase of inflammation, restoring balance without compromising the immune system's ability to fight infections.SPMs have some pretty amazing functions including:

  • reducing excessive immune responses
  • clearing cellular debris
  • stimulating tissue regeneration

By enhancing the natural resolution process, SPMs can help prevent chronic inflammation (often associated with disease states such as arthritis, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative conditions). As mentioned previously, SPMs are naturally occurring molecules derived from omega-3 and omega-6 fats, making them pretty easy to consume through food. Here are some ways to get all of the different families (resolvins, protectins, maresins, lipoxins) of SPMs in your daily nutrition plan:

  • Fatty fish: Salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies and herring.
  • Fish oil supplements: High-quality fish oil capsules or liquid provide concentrated EPA and DHA.
  • Algae-based supplements: A plant-based option, especially for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

As you may already know, maintaining a proper balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in your daily nutrition plan is crucial. Western diets often have an overabundance of omega-6s, which can shift the body toward pro-inflammatory pathways. Increasing omega-3 intake while moderating omega-6 consumption supports the production of SPMs and promotes inflammation resolution.Keep in mind that certain factors, such as age, inflammation levels and the overall quality of your daily nutrition plan, can influence your body’s ability to produce SPMs. Choose foods that have SPMs but if you are thinking about using a SPM supplement, be sure to consult with a qualified Sport Dietitian to receive a customized food and supplement plan. Reach out to the Sport Dietitian team at eNRG Performance to help in your journey of improved health, longevity and fitness!
